About Me
I’m Alyx- a Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC) and graduate of the University of Victoria’s Master of Counselling Psychology program, with over ten years of experience supporting people in their mental health and healing journeys.
I bring warmth, honesty, and a grounded presence to my work. I’m a naturally gentle person, but I’ll also be clear and direct with you about what I think might be happening, and what pathways forward could support your growth. I promise to offer you more than simply being a good listener—our work together will be active, and oriented toward meaningful change. I also like to bring a bit of humour into the room when needed.
Before becoming a counsellor, I worked as a family support worker, where I ran prenatal groups and supported people through pregnancy, pregnancy loss, infertility, and the transition to parenthood. I enjoy working with clients of all genders, and I have both passion and experience supporting LGBTQIA+ individuals and couples. I welcome people from diverse backgrounds and family structures, and I’m committed to creating a space where you can show up fully as yourself. Most of all, I am here to honour, understand, and work alongside your unique background and life experiences.
Approach
I believe that healing happens in safe, attuned relationships and through direct engagement with our emotional experience—the kind that allows old patterns to be identified and rewritten. My approach is experiential, which means we’ll go beyond talking about what’s happening and instead explore your inner experience directly, with curiosity and compassion.
I will always begin with working to understand you and the ways you’ve learned to navigate the world. Almost always, our struggles arise from patterns that once helped us survive or belong. Until we can see these patterns clearly and understand the wisdom in how they formed, it can feel nearly impossible to do things differently.
I tailor therapy to each client’s goals, values, and desired pace. Throughout our work together, I will check in regularly to ensure the process feels meaningful, focused, and aligned with your goals.
Modalities
I draw from three primary experiential models for the foundation of my work: Accelerated Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy (AEDP), Coherence Therapy, and Internal Family Systems (IFS) to support deeper processing, and lasting change.
I have specialized training in trauma processing for PTSD and complex trauma, including Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) and Baranowsky’s Triphasic Trauma Model. I also have specialized training in Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) for treating obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD).
Alongside these approaches, I integrate mindfulness, meditation, and principles from Buddhist psychology, informed by years of personal practice and professional training.
In my work with couples and other relational pairs (friends, siblings, family members), I utilize AEDP and Intimacy from the Inside Out (an IFS/ parts-based approach). These approaches help partners slow down reactivity and learn to support and understand one another more deeply, including how each person’s past experiences have shaped their ways of relating. Together, I will support you both in working toward shared understanding, repair, and reconnection. I also support couple’s navigating differing desire and intimacy needs.
